Painting My Jeans for the First Time! Hand Painting with Tulip Fabric Paint and Posca Marker on Denim
Inspired by the girls on TikTok, I decided to try and paint my jeans for the first time! I've never painted fabric before, nor have I ever used Tulip Fabric Paint. Watch me try and figure out painting on denim in this video! I decided to paint a snake with some vines on the front thigh of my pants and some slime drips would be the painting on the back pocket of my jeans. This video is a lot of me trying to trouble shoot how best to paint on denim and trying to figure out if I can even use Posca Markers to draw on fabric? I ended up laying some base color on the denim with the fabric paint, and then after letting it dry I went back and drew on my jeans with Posca Markers. It took two days which was longer than I initially expected because I had to let the Tulip Fabric Paint dry but the Posca Pens actually worked really well on denim and I'm so excited with how these jeans came out! Let me know in the comments what you think about my snake painting and if you've ever painted denim, how did it go?!
What is up you guys, my name is Sophia Mitropoulos, I am an artist, and a designer and creative, and a bunch of other things, and today I'm gonna be painting my jeans. Just like the girls on TikTok baby! I have never painted on fabric before and I have no idea how it's gonna go, I'm hoping that it goes totally well and normally. And yeah I don't see what could go wrong. I don't really know what to expect but I bought some fabric paint and hopefully it goes well. It is hot as balls in this room because I have to keep the fan on low so that you can hear me.
These jeans do have some embellishments already. Last summer when I was silk screening some stuff for my company and I silk screened Get Bulky on the leg. Because I was wearing them and I thought it would be cool. That's like the slogan of my business, so if you feel the need for some Get Bulky apparel you can find that on snatchmagazine.net Moving on! I also have this patch from Adam JK that says "I literally don't even know why I went to art school" and that's really relevant because you can watch my art school video about that.
I'll be honest I have never painted jeans before and I'm not sure I even really have a plan right now, but I'm gonna give it an honest effort. So let's look at what I've got to work with. Please excuse my extreme glossy face, I have a lot of Glossier on, but mostly I'm just really sweaty cuz it's hot as heck in New York. So these are the jeans we've got, our beautiful Adam JK patch I actually I think I got these jeans at Primark and I actually bought them in two different sizes because I wanted one pair as a kind of going-out pair and one pair as a work pair, and these are my work pair.
As far as my paint situation goes, I got these at Michaels right before quarantine started because everybody on TikTok was painting their jeans and I wanted to be a part of it, and then you know how quarantine goes. I didn't do anything for a little while, but now here we are painting the good stuff. They didn't have that many colors so I went with the closest thing I could get to CMYK and I'm gonna try and mix them. I have no idea how it's gonna go I also have Posca markers, which I have never used on fabric, but apparently it's supposed to work, so that should be great. Here's my brushes, here's my palette, there's some water- it will have some water in it. So like I said, I've never painted on a pair of jeans before but I did do some research to see what other people have made and I'll show you my ideas. I found a couple of things I really like this color palette, I like this composition but I don't think I'm gonna do flowers, so I think I'm gonna do a snake and I think I'm gonna do some variation of plants with it and then I'll also do a pocket.
I read the instructions too late. Artists and Craftsman Supply coming back for a second use. I don't know if it's easier because I've done an under painting or because I switched brushes or because I put the cardboard in but for some reason this second layer is going on way better than first.
So we're gonna let it dry for tonight. Tomorrow I'm gonna come back and try to see if I can do some shading and some detail with Posca markers and then potentially also do a pocket and then I'll do a little try-on so you can see what it looks like! So I'm signing off and I'll see you tomorrow. All right y'all, it is day two, I am back in the sunroom slash studio slash workspace and I'm ready to give it another shot. The paint dried overnight but it's kind of crusty and weird so I'm gonna try and do some shading with the Posca markers and hopefully it won't be as tacky as it was yesterday when I tried to do it over the wet paint.
But I'll show you what that looks like and then we'll get started and try to finish it off and we'll see how it goes. Alright so this is how it's turned out so far. This is my marking from the chalk that I used to outline. It's kind of crusty and a little heavy but I feel like it'll take the marker. You can see I tried to do some Posca yesterday but I just couldn't put down enough coverage so the plan today is to bring some the detail in of the vine and bring it over the snake and then I'm going to add some shading and some detail work with Posca markers to both of them. Alright so I actually like it as of right now, I definitely did the scales pretty sloppy but it's apparel, we're not gonna be looking at it super close-up and I think I'm okay with it at this point. I'm considering putting a black outline on the snake but I feel like that could either make or break in it so I'm gonna do a mock up with my finger on my phone. Oh geez.
So first thing I'm gonna do is take a picture, I'm gonna open up Procreate Pocket and then import the photo and then basically the way I'm gonna do it is just quick and dirty. I'm gonna get black, so then I'll do the monoline and I'm just gonna give it a shot. And this is mostly just to see how it looks and if I want to do it. So I don't really care if it looks nice. I can't decide if it'll help or hurt. So that only took a few seconds and I feel like I do like it so I'm gonna do it. I don't know if I should do the leaf or not but I guess if I want to try it I'll try it later. So I'm gonna do it I'm gonna try and do it with Posca markers and let's go! So I'm actually really happy with how it came out, which I to be honest didn't expect to be, but I decided I am gonna do a pocket but I think I'm gonna try it with just Posca markers.
It was a lot easier to draw with the markers on the denim and I wonder if I had just done a white base layer and then colored it all in with Posca it would have been better. I mean that's kind of what I did, I did a really light base layer and then did the detail work with the marker but so I am gonna do the back pocket. I'm gonna do a little like slime drip so let's give it a shot. So it turns out I was right, the Posca markers are not opaque enough to just lay down color by themselves so I did the outline of where I want my slime to be in white and then I'm gonna let that dry, probably not for the full four hours because I didn't do a super thick coat, and then I'll come back and finish it. Okay, I finished and I am gonna go try them on. I actually can't wait to see them and I feel like they came out really well. Okay I'm honestly stoked with how they came out. I wish the pants fit a little bit better but this is what we got, thank you so much for watching, my name is Sophia Mitropoulos, I'll see you next time, bye!
